Role overview:

We are looking for an experienced and Creative Content Writer to join our team. This role is unique, as it combines traditional content creation with digital publishing expertise to enhance the “membership” experience. Our audience isn’t just a group of subscribers; they’re members engaged in the dynamic world of local politics. The right candidate will have a strong understanding of Chicago and Illinois political landscapes, bringing the publisher’s voice to our audience through weekly updates, insights on national news, and a concierge-like approach to content delivery.



Key responsibilities include:

  • Creating Original and Repurposed Content: Craft new content, update existing material, and tailor pieces such as bios, guides, reports, and newsletters, incorporating political context and providing members with a concierge-style welcome and weekly insights.
  • Documentation and Content Summarization: Summarize meetings and events in a format similar to Documenters.org, ensuring content remains timely, relevant, and accessible.
  • Web Development and Visual Data Representation: Using HTML/CSS, create visually appealing, structured digital content and develop interactive data representations, including charts and maps, to enhance our readers’ experience.
  • Process Optimization and Tech Recommendations: Introduce and implement new digital tools and technologies to streamline content production and management, while ensuring compliance with our tech standards.

Qualifications:

  • Content Creation Experience: Proven experience in content creation, copywriting, or similar roles, with a strong portfolio showcasing excellent written communication skills.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and Adobe Suite. HTML/CSS and web development skills are a must, with additional experience in content management systems (CMS) a plus.
  • Analytical and Data Visualization Skills: Experience in data representation and proficiency with data science tools or techniques to display data visually (charts, maps) is highly valued.
  • Digital Innovation: Strong advantage for candidates knowledgeable in emerging digital tools, software, and efficiencies to improve content management and member engagement.
  • Political Knowledge: Strong understanding of Chicago/Illinois politics is highly valued.
  • Strict AI Use Policy: AI use is strictly regulated. Unauthorized use is grounds for termination. Approved AI tools may be used under the owner’s direction, subject to prior approval and strict adherence to our editorial standards.
